In March 2023, Shane joined Dale Foong (PSP Ltd), Val Matthews (Bluevision Consulting), and Martin Curristan (Turner & Townsend) for Project Chatter Podcast to discuss his decades-long career in project controls. His career began on the Phillips Petroleum Teesside Oil Terminal, a 1970s mega-project, where he explains how contractors then thought project controls was only needed to satisfy the client.
He then talks about how he has seen project controls evolve over the years and is now viewed as essential for engineering and construction projects. He also offers his top tips to project controllers on how to interact with other members of the project team.
In 2012, during his Project Management MSc at University of Manchester, Shane presented this plenary lecture to his fellow students. It opens with an examination of typical difficulties found in creating project schedules.
This is followed by an overview of best practices from the professional organisations, such as CIOB, APM and ACostE. Shane continues by outlining the "real world" solutions he put in place at Whessoe, AMEC and elsewhere.
Here's a 5-minute video extract from a one-hour webinar Shane delivered in 2021, entitled Project Scoping - an Industry View.
In this extract Shane offers some thoughts on Optimism Bias, Final Investment Decision (FID), Bid no Bid (contractors perspective) and Project Benefits (with some interesting reflection on HS2 at the time).
As project management has evolved to include portfolios, programmes, and projects, This allows corporate strategy to be cascaded from top to the bottom of the organisation.
Shane begins by discussing some basic principles of strategic management and goes on to explain how to apply strategic management to an organisation's portfolios of projects and programmes. Throughout his talk, Shane describes a number of informative and useful processes and tools, and also considers the human aspects.
